PDF tools

The daily PDF jobs, done inside your browser: your document is never uploaded, there is no account and no counter, and the sizes are printed exactly, before and after. Most of these jobs finish in well under a second on the bench, because the engine is a tidy open-source program (@cantoo/pdf-lib, on the credits page), not a queue on someone else's server.

Compress PDF to a size

On the bench

The lead PDF job: pick a target, 200 KB, 500 KB, 2 MB or your own number, and the page works to land under it, printing the exact size it reached. If it cannot reach the target, it says so before you download.

Compress PDF to 200 KB

On the bench

The flagship preset for tight government and job portals, with the 200 KB target already set.

Merge PDF

On the bench

As many files as your device can hold, in your order. Pages are copied, not rebuilt, so nothing is re-encoded. On the bench, 25 files merged in 71 milliseconds and came out smaller than the biggest site's result on the same files.

Split PDF

On the bench

Pull a page range out as one PDF, or take every page as its own file.

Read a scan (OCR)

On the bench

Scanned pages are read at 300 DPI into checkable text, plus a searchable PDF. On the standard test invoice the bench read 96% of characters correctly; check money amounts, because the reader can drop a decimal point, and the page tells you so.

In the plan for this family

  • JPG to PDF and PDF to JPG (measured or scoped; opens when it passes its checks)
  • Compress PDF to 100 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB and 50 KB preset pages (measured or scoped; opens when it passes its checks)
  • Rotate, extract, remove and organise pages (measured or scoped; opens when it passes its checks)
  • Add page numbers, add a watermark, view and strip PDF metadata (measured or scoped; opens when it passes its checks)
  • Protect and unlock PDF (after its engine passes a separate audit) (measured or scoped; opens when it passes its checks)

One door stays shut on purpose: turning a PDF into a perfectly editable Word document is a job this workshop does not promise, because the honest version of it is "basic text, jumbled layout". A page that cannot do a job well says so, per the standing rules.
